Thanksgiving officially kicks off the holiday season, beginning a time of year that brings out the goodness in a world too often clouded by evil and corruption. The sports world, unfortunately, has been a microcosm of this sad reality, pronounced by the recent Penn State University scandal.

However, despite the recent negativity, there is a much to be thankful for in the sports world today:

  • Tim Tebow – for showing that high character, determination and faith can lead to success, on and off the field.
  • Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Oregon – for losing their football games last weekend to further complicate the Bowl Championship Series and underscore its absurdity.
  • Tiger Woods – for helping the United States win the 2011 President’s Cup while playing like the all-time great we were accustomed to seeing.
  • Justice system – for taking down former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky and hopefully bringing much-needed peace to his victims.
  • Penn State football team – for beating Ohio State last weekend and showing that no one bad person or action is bigger than an institution and its student achievement.
  • Sidney Crosby – for returning to the NHL ice after suffering a career-threatening concussion 10 months ago.
  • NBA lockout – for allowing sports fans to not be subjected to endless LeBron James and Miami Heat “highlights” on SportsCenter every night.
  • College basketball – for showing sports fans how basketball is truly played, with tireless pride and passion (unlike the NBA).
  • NFL – for avoiding a lockout.
  • Football – for giving fans weekend excitement in the fall and winter (especially on Thanksgiving Day).
  • Miami Heat and Philadelphia Eagles – for showing everyone that money and talent alone do not guarantee success.
  • Oklahoma State University community – for its strength and resiliency following the tragic deaths of the women’s basketball head coach Kurt Budke and assistant coach Miranda Serna.
  • Youths and amateurs in sports – for participating for the right reasons.
  • America – for giving fans the freedom to play and enjoy sports.
  • Family, friends and faith – they make life complete.

Happy Thanksgiving.
